AMDSB and Conestoga College are thrilled to announce the successful completion of the inaugural Electrical for Women Dual Credit course. This innovative program provided young women from AMDSB secondary schools the opportunity to explore Residential and Industrial Electrical studies, giving them both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in the electrical trade.
Throughout the course, students learned vital skills such as safety protocols, electrical theory, and practical project work. They gained experience in residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) sectors, with a focus on small-scale electrical tasks. Students also explored quality standards and craftsmanship, all while discovering exciting career opportunities in the electrical field.
A Step Toward Closing the Gender Gap in Trades
While women make up nearly half of Canada’s workforce, they represent only a small fraction of the skilled trades industry. The Electrical for Women program aims to challenge these gender stereotypes by encouraging young women to pursue careers in the trades. The skilled trades industry is experiencing a growing demand for workers, especially with the construction sector facing a shortage of skilled labour in the coming years. This is an exciting opportunity for women to access well-paying, stable jobs, with the potential for long-term career growth.
Student Experiences and Impact
The students involved in the program had overwhelmingly positive feedback about their experience. Many expressed how much they appreciated the balance between theory and hands-on work, with one student sharing:
"The course helped clarify my career path and gave me the chance to work on real-world projects. It felt like a real college experience, and it will look great on my resume!"
Others highlighted how the program empowered them:
"It was empowering to know I could do electrical work. This course boosted my confidence and helped me practice safety while working independently. It made me feel like an adult."
The opportunity to work at their own pace and earn both secondary school and college credits was also a significant advantage for the students:
"I loved that I could attend one day a week while still going to my secondary school. Plus, the course was free, including all the tools and supplies. It felt amazing to be able to learn without worrying about additional costs."
Students also expressed how the program helped them build new connections and gain valuable skills for their futures:
"This course has introduced me to amazing people who share my interests. The opportunities in electrical co-op education and careers feel much more accessible now, and I’m excited about the future!"
Parents also shared their pride in seeing their daughters explore new career possibilities. One parent said:
"This program has opened my daughter's eyes to the many opportunities available for women in skilled trades, which are often overlooked. She has learned so much about the electrical field and is now excited about pursuing a career she enjoys."
Instructor and Educator Praise
Instructors from Conestoga College shared their admiration for the dedication and success of the students, many of whom completed 95% of assignments on time and showed great independence in their learning. Educators from AMDSB also praised the young women for their professionalism and commitment, noting how the program provides a valuable head start for students considering future careers in the trades.
Looking Toward the Future
The success of this first course marks a significant milestone in promoting women’s participation in skilled trades. AMDSB and Conestoga College are committed to continuing this partnership and offering more opportunities for young women to explore and pursue careers in skilled trades. With a growing demand for skilled workers and a shift toward more inclusive environments, the future of women in trades looks brighter than ever.
We look forward to running more Skilled Trades Dual Credit courses in the future and encourage more young women to join us in exploring these rewarding career paths!
