Experiential Learning
Experiential Learning spans all grades at Avon Maitland District School Board. Educators are embedding this learning into everyday practices as well as designing larger initiatives to support students, parents and the school community.
Our students are experiencing local, national and global initiatives that matter to them. They are participating in opportunities, reflecting on those opportunities and then applying what they have learned to other aspects of their life.
These opportunities have grown from hands-on experiences to virtual experiences to a little bit of both. Check out some of the amazing opportunities that have happened in our school board!
The Experiential Learning Cycle
Phase | Guiding Question | Description |
Participate | What? | Students are immersed in an experience, acknowledge what they are doing, what they are thinking, and what they are feeling during the exercise. |
Reflect | So what? | Students think about their experience, guided by reflective questions and prompts, and identify what they learned as a result of the experience - about themselves, other people, the world, their opportunities, or the topic of study. |
Apply | Now what? | Students describe how their learning stimulates further inquiry: how it has influenced - or may influence - their decisions, opinions, goals and plans; and what they might do differently if they have a similar experience in the future. |
