Media Release

April 25, 2025

The Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) has partnered with Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) to tackle youth vaping and the impacts of technology and social media. As demonstrated by surveys administered in 2023, more Huron Perth youth are vaping compared to the provincial average, and less than 1% are meeting the daily screen time recommendation.

In order to raise awareness about the issue of screen time and social media, and to equip parents with ideas on how to address the issue, AMDSB is hosting free in-person film screenings. The events will feature a film called “Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age” (2025 update) which takes a look at the latest science, research, and expert insights. Students are welcome to attend as well, refreshments will be provided, and childcare will be available for families with younger children (please register in advance for childcare using this Google Form). The board is also launching an anti-vaping campaign featuring initiatives for AMDSB staff, students and parents/guardians that aims to:

  1. Raise awareness about the risks of vaping
  2. Equip parents/guardians with strategies on how to discuss the issue with their children and youth, and
  3. Provide resources and support for helping youth quit.

Jane Morris, Superintendent of Education points out: “We know that overuse of technology and vaping are major issues for students. Our hope is that by equipping students themselves, as well as staff and families, with accurate information about the risks and what to do about it, we will provide the support that will make a difference.”
